The day started out clear and crisp as I road over the Sims Home this morning. My thoughts were traveling a mile a minute thinking about all the veterans that have suffered and are still suffering the pain of war. Today we would be honoring 165 that reside in a State run Veterans Home in Bay County Florida. I have been doing this for over ten years and my thought are who will take over and do it when I no longer can. Anyway for the last four years the Veterans Task Force of taken on getting thing organized, inviting the Warrior Watch Rider and other riding organization and clubs to participate by riding their motorcycle to the home and standing a flag line to honor these veterans. Additionally, we purchase and prepare lunch for everyone. The Republican women provide all the deserts and they have for the last 10 years.
This year we had to Honor Guards to post the Colors , JROT Marines & Air Force they did a awesome job. These young men & women practice so much and they did us proud. They also did a Flag folding ceremony which was also awesome! Kudo’s to them!
The day went by so fast were enjoyed the company of the old soldiers, warriors everyone. Just to mention a few of them will not do justice to all of them. I must tell you of a couple of them. One was at & survived the D-Day invasion. He remember it like it was yesterday ( We veterans know how that’s possible). Iwo Jima was the epic battle that two others survived, We also a WWII Submariner, his stories would chill you to the bone. Seven Ladies all from WWII and Korea, one had been assigned to MacArthur The eighth lady Sara who had been a spy for us passed away this week. Mary and I had become very close to Sara and today was hard for us both. Every year there a new Veterans and we have lost a few more. Walked, used canes, walkers and wheel chairs the double American Flag Line as we thanked the great warriors.
More to come later when I get some photos upload! I am including some thought from the Warrior Watch Riders that attended this event.
From Sarge SC Warriors’ Watch Riders Northwest Florida Chapter ” It was a privilege to be invited to “Sims Veterans Nursing Home” to honor our friends and heroes that reside there. It was as though all the stars had finally aligned. The residents, the staff, the guest, the Veterans Task Force of NW Florida, and all the Veteran support organizations, clubs, and independents once again came together under one flag of respect. The weather was made to order. Guest speakers, official fanfare, and introduction of each resident as they proceeded threw a wave of Red, White, and Blue concluded the official ceremony. Proud patriots, manning the flag line, shared in the Honor of thanking each passing Hero for their service. Now the event took a serious turn; good food prepared by the North West Florida Veteran’s Task Force, was ready to serve. Job well done by all the cooks, the behind the scene gang, the staff, the community, and most importantly, YOU the MEMBER. As we focus our attention on the Veteran this special day, also remember the Veteran family, the Veteran caregivers, and the Veteran community. Combined, they make America the greatest country in the world.”
